Fabriciuss

2024

The project fabriciuses began during the Navigation ceramics symposium in the autumn of 2024, when the first ceramic sculptures on this subject were created. Jānis Fabriciuss (1877–1929) was a political figure whose monument (sculptor J. Zariņš, unveiled in 1956) is located in Ventspils, opposite the entrance to the Ventspils Main Library. Media discussions regarding the necessity of one fabricius or another—or more precisely, a symbolic bearer of a bygone power—led me to reflect on how easily we dismantle old monuments, only to replace them with others more pleasing to our internal politics. In this small format, anyone can safely keep their own internal fabriciuses on a nightstand and show them to friends when the occasion arises.
