The exhibition Refrains was created specifically for a complex space — the gallery of the Estonian Painters' Union, Kadrioru Plazza (Tallinn), distinguished by its spiraling walls. Using the gallery's particular spatial conditions, the paintings travel through the floors like a choir performing a polyphonic piece, creating the effect of voices singing together. To establish a connection with both the space and the artist's existing cycles of work, Refrains was created. A series with a value of its own. Though rooted in real forms, the painting is nonetheless abstracted, and the decisive role in this body of work belongs to painterly technique and the materiality of colour. Close tonal relationships and the presence of an undisclosed secret — that may be what is most characteristic of Refrains.
