A secret is something only you yourself know, and this knowledge can be shared with people you consider trustworthy. It is your free will and choice whom to share it with. A secret makes a person superior to those who do not possess that knowledge. Hidden knowledge places you in an equal position with others who have access to it. By revealing a secret, a circle of the chosen is formed. A secret is an instrument of power and fear.
The terrible, however frightening it may be, if it is obvious and can be explained by reason, cannot compete with dangers that are unknown and hidden. Much as in Alfred Hitchcock's films, where fear holds the viewer in its grip precisely because it lives in our imagination. Anything at all could be there — and that is what makes it more terrifying.
